Cd-ni batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries, and lithium-ion batteries are mostly small batteries with complex composition, high regeneration cost, and difficult recycling, which makes it difficult for the regeneration industry to realize market-oriented operation.  At present, the global average recycling proportion of these batteries is less than 20%, especially lithium-ion batteries, most countries have not achieved effective recycling and regeneration

Lead-acid batteries are the cheapest secondary batteries, costing about one-third as much per unit of energy as lithium-ion or nickel-hydrogen batteries.

The technology of lead-acid battery is mature and the production process is simple.

In addition, the important components of lead-acid batteries are lead and lead compounds, and the lead content is more than 60% of the total mass of the battery. The salvage value of used batteries is higher, and the recovery price is more than 30% of the new battery, so the comprehensive cost of lead-acid batteries is lower.

Disadvantages of Lead Acid Battery

Although lead-acid batteries are a bit too much, they do have some disadvantages. 

1. Low energy density 

The mass and volume energy density of the traditional lead-acid battery is low, the energy density is only about 1/3 of the lithium-ion battery, and 1/2 of the nickel-hydrogen battery, and the volume is large, not suitable for the use of lightweight, small-volume.  In the future, the energy density of lead-acid batteries still has great room for improvement, especially for lead-acid batteries with new materials and technologies, such as carbon foam. 

2. The lead-acid battery cycle life is short 

The cycle life of traditional lead-acid batteries is short, and the theoretical cycle times are about 1/3 of that of lithium-ion batteries.  The cycle life of lead-acid battery improvement space is still relatively large, especially with new materials, new structures,s and new technology lead-acid batteries, such as bipolar lead-acid batteries, lead-carbon batteries, etc. 

3. There is a risk of lead pollution in the industrial chain 

Lead is an important raw material for lead-acid batteries, which account for more than 60% of battery production costs. The amount of lead used in lead-acid batteries occupied more than 80% of the total amount of lead used.  Lead is a heavy metal. The lead-acid battery manufacturing industry chain (including primary lead smelting, battery manufacturing, battery recycling, and recycled lead smelting) has a high risk of lead pollution. Poor management will cause environmental pollution and harm to human health.
